Surface Finishing

Surface finishing is the final manufacturing step that defines both the aesthetic look and the functional performance of a granite slab. While many people think of granite as naturally “shiny,” it actually reaches that state through a meticulous process of mechanical abrasion, thermal treatment, or chemical exposure

The choice of finish impacts color depth, slip resistance, and how often the stone needs sealing.

1. Popular Indoor Finishes

These finishes are designed for beauty and ease of cleaning in kitchens and bathrooms.

  • Polished Finish: The most common choice, achieved by using progressively finer diamond abrasives (up to 12,000 grit). This creates a mirror-like shine that enhances the stone’s natural colors and patterns while making it highly stain-resistant.

  • Honed Finish: A smooth, matte surface without the reflection. The process stops before the final buffing stage. It offers a softer, natural look and is less prone to showing fingerprints or scratches, making it popular for modern, understated designs.

  • Leathered (Satin) Finish: A textured finish created by running diamond-tipped brushes over a honed slab. It has a pebbled feel and a soft sheen. It is excellent at hiding water spots and crumbs, making it ideal for busy family kitchens.

2. Outdoor & High-Traction Finishes

These finishes focus on safety and durability against the elements.

  • Flamed Finish: Created by exposing the stone to an intense flame (~2,000°F), causing surface crystals to “pop” and create a rough, slip-resistant texture. It is the standard for outdoor walkways and pool decks.

  • Bush-Hammered: A mechanical process where a specialized tool strikes the surface repeatedly to create uniform pits. It provides a rugged, weathered look with a very high coefficient of friction for industrial safety.
